Fissure Sealants
Even with excellent dental hygiene, it can be challenging to remove food particles and plaque from the hard-to-reach areas of your back teeth. Dental sealants provide an effective barrier, sealing out plaque and food to protect these vulnerable surfaces from decay.

What Are Sealants and Who Can Benefit?
A dental sealant is a thin layer of resin applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth to fill in their grooves and pits, making them easier to clean. These hard-to-reach areas often trap plaque that a toothbrush cannot effectively remove.

Sealants are beneficial for adults with healthy molars and can also be particularly advantageous for children. For instance, sealants may be recommended for baby teeth that have deep grooves, as these teeth help maintain proper spacing for permanent teeth. Keeping baby teeth healthy is crucial to prevent early loss and ensure a smooth transition to adult teeth.

How Are Sealants Applied?
The application of dental sealants is a quick and painless procedure, typically completed in just a few minutes per tooth:
-
Cleaning: The teeth are thoroughly cleaned to remove any debris.
-
Drying: Each tooth is dried, and absorbent material is placed around it to maintain a dry surface.
-
Preparation: An acidic gel is applied to the chewing surface to roughen the tooth enamel, enhancing the bond between the tooth and the sealant. After a short time, the gel is rinsed away.
-
Application: The sealant is painted onto the tooth surface, where it adheres and hardens. A special curing light may be used to expedite the hardening process.
How Long Do Sealants Last?
Sealants can provide long-lasting protection against decay for several years. However, they may need to be replaced over time due to normal wear and tear, chipping, or if they begin to lose their bond with the tooth. During your regular dental check-ups, we will assess the condition of your sealants and reapply them if necessary.
